During the late 60s and early 70s surf culture was rife in California, but on waveless days crews such as the Zephyr Surf Team would take to the streets with skateboards to practice. This crew are known for kickstarting vert-style skating and are the subject of the 2005 film Lords of Dogtown.
This parallel between skating and surfing is not lost on new Northern Quarter bar Dogtown, which is based at 100-102 High Street. The walls are adorned with classic skate and surfboards, with a grindable skate block against the outer wall.
The venue is accommodating of all people, whether they skate, surf, or just enjoy a night out. They also have their own “Dogtown Challenge”, in which they challenge people to change into a wetsuit in a certain amount of time to win a free drink. Under one minute and you get a free cocktail, priced at £10, under two minutes and you win a pint, with the cheapest priced at £5.20, and for getting it on in under three minutes you win a free shot.
They also have an offer on where whenever you hear the iconic “Jackass” theme bottles of Corona are available for just £1! They serve a multitude of foods along with their drinks such as chips and American classics corn dogs, or as they put it on their Instagram: “Big stupid drinks and food on sticks.”
The bar is open from 3pm till 3am every day, with 2for1 on all booze every Wednesday till midnight, so next time you need an American-surf-injection into your landlocked Manchester life, get down to Dogtown.
