U+Music – Five tracks to power your playlists

Where has this year gone already, our penultimate music lowdown of June but that doesn’t mean its lacking bangers to add to your playlists. From songs in upcoming films to former Glastonbury headliners, this week’s five tracks are sure to bring the energy in time for the weekend.

First up is a song we thought we would never have to write about, a Barbie World song. The new tune is a remix of the classic Aqua song featuring Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj and it actually works.

Next, we take a turn to a more up-beat house tune. Mercy by The Blessed Madonna ft Jacob Lusk is a release you will hear over and over again this summer. A flawless disco-house beat complemented by lyrics that reminder us a lot of Sam Smith’s vocals in Calvin Harris’ Promises. This one really brings the Friday feeling.

Following the house theme, this time following a harder hitting tech-house beat. Peggy Gou’s (It Goes Like) Nanana is a another summer anthem but more likely to be heard on festival dance stages than at your local boozer. No matter where you hear it, be prepared to do some toe tapping – it’s quite hard not to.

With Glastonbury on this weekend, it’s only right we included a former headliner in this list. Toxic Traits is Stormzy & Fredo’s new tune and we can’t believe this is the first time they have collab’d because it works so well. What makes this song even more special is that Dave is on the production, bringing with him a classic grimy beat with lots of bass.

Switching it up completely is Hozier’s Unknown/Nth. Similar to the likes of Jason Derulo and Marina, Hozier joins the small club of artists who were shot back into the limelight through TikTok. The clips of them playing in the New York subway and singing the traditional Irish song Humours of Whiskey both were viewed millions of times. The new song is a lot slower than the rest of this list but don’t let that put you off, the powerful vocals make this one well worth the listen. Perfect to blast out on a wholesome Sunday morning.
