Manchester’s Pride (and Joy) – everything to expect at Manchester Pride this year

Manchester Pride is set to take place in August across the city centre

As pride season is upon us, it’s time for one of the UK’s leading gay rights charities to paint the city with rainbows.

Manchester Pride Festival has become a staple date in the calendar, with people travelling from all over to play a part in the weekend, but it has not always been so widely accepted.

It wasn’t until 1988, when a campaign of over 20,000 residents made their voice heard, that members of the LGBTQ+ community could freely express themselves in the city. From there, Pride as we know it was born.

‘Pride Foundation’, Manchester Pride’s charity, are fighting to create a safer space for members of the LGBTQ+ community within the Northwest.

This year, the city is ready to celebrate more than ever, and have even incorporated their beloved bee into the picture.

The theme, ‘Buzzin’ to be Queer – A Hive of Progress’, will remain the central theme throughout the four day ceremony, proving how, just like worker bees, members of the community can “achieve great things once united”.

There will be three stages across the Gay Village itself, which includes an indoor clubbing experience, and a runway by RuPaul’s Drag Race Star, Banksie.

Artist Jesse J is also confirmed to be performing at Gay Village during the bank holiday weekend, alongside Rita Ora and Eurovision winner, Loreen.

Noughties girl band, Sugababes, have also confirmed their attendance.

As always, booze will be on sale scattered across the grounds, alongside market stalls that’ll be bursting with merch of all kinds – guaranteed to include all things glam and glitter.

The annual festival will be running from 23 – 26 August, with the parade setting off midday on 24 August.

Anyone is free to attend and celebrate the parade. Weekend tickets are available for those who wish to join in with the Gay Village party, with prices starting at £27.50. This includes a fixed £2.50 donation from each sale heading straight to the charity.
